Hair Bands

This is a picture from Enocha Van Lierop's News13 Blog
While I was getting ready for work Monday, I made a horrific discover. I’m losing my hair. A good-sized chunk of it came out while I was drying it. Surprisingly, I didn’t scream. I just pulled it out of the brush and thought, “Well, that can’t possibly be good.” Then I kept drying my hair.

The rest of the day I kept pulling lost hairs off my shoulders. Yes, this really can’t be good.

I’m going to say it’s due to stress. There’s been quite a bit of craziness at work lately. The kind of craziness that makes you want to pull you hair out. On the bright side, now I don’t have to bother pulling.

When you write blogs two topics are unavoidable: pets and top five lists. Since work has been insane I thought I’d compile my top five list of artists to listen to when the world’s gone mad. It’s long title, but it get’s the point across.

Usually my moment of zen happens in the car on the way home from work. During this time, I dig through my CDs and find the loudest music I can blare through my speakers. I have narrowed my choices down to five.

1. Strike Anywhere
2. Nina Simone
3. Blindside
4. Rise Against
5. Harley Poe

Strike Anywhere - I adore Strike Anywhere. As far as I’m concerned, it’s impossible for this Virgnia band to write an album I don’t like. The commentary on social injustice is concise and enlightening without being trite. It also doesn’t hurt that their lyrics are great fun to scream going down Harrision Avenue late at night.

Nina Simone - Sometimes, try as I may, people just don’t understand. On those days, lyrics like “I’m just a soul whose intentions are good. Oh, Lord, please don’t let me be misunderstood” hit a special spot in my heart. I also like “Feelin’ Good.” Nina Simone lends the song a deeper meaning than anyone else I’ve heard sing this tune.

Blindside - I don’t like hardcore. That said Blindside still holds a special place in my musical library.  Lead singer Christian Lindskog screams, and I enjoy screaming right along with him. Somewhere during my many moves, I lost my favorite album, A Thought Crushed my Mind. But the distrortion used on some of the newer albums makes my skull rattle, and to be perfectly honest, sometimes I need that to feel sane again.

Rise Agaist
- This band is REALLY loud, but the group also has some very intense lyrics. They weave perfect imagery. Not too many people can do that with a song anymore, at least not rock bands. Imagery is something most people leave to country ballads, but imagery also has a place in rock. Rise Against does a good job of creating hidden stories with their songs. Did I meantion they’re loud?

Harley Poe - Harley Poe is an odd little band. They’re obscure. They’re not on a major label. On their label’s website Harley Poe’s songs are described as “most songs usually related to scary things that people don’t like to talk about.” Most of their songs are horror movie related, but they’re played upbeat instead of in minor chords. It’s the bizarre contradiction that attracted me. You can look so happy while singing a song about the end of the world. It’s rather funny.
As the week progressed, my hairloss started to lessen. It’s not that the level of stress has gone down, but I think my nightly drive soundtrack has helped.

About Me

I'm a fourth generation Floridian. I have degrees from Chipola Junior College (when it was still a junior college) and the University of West Florida. When I was at UWF, I lived off of exit 13. Back in Panama City, I began working at News 13 on November 13th, 2006. Thirteen has proved to be my lucky number. Last year, I joined the Panama City Roller Derby League. When I'm not providing the Panhandle with the latest news, I'm tearing up the track with over 20 other roller girls, two of which are also News 13 employees. I'm sure I drive everyone at work insane with all my talk of derby. But hey, that's how I roll.
