Mama Wyatt Said Knock You Out

Saturday, March 1, the lovely ladies of Panama City Roller Derby League took on the Mississippi Rollergirls in Biloxi. We were really excited to play another team coming off our win against Mobile last month. Though some of the newer girls were pretty sure this was going to be easy, those of us who went through last season warned them that we lost EVERY game last year. Just because we won one game doesn’t insure an easy season.

Debo Lishun, Wyatt Riot and I rode with Wyatt’s mom to the bout. All of us talked the entire way to Mississippi after a brief stop in Pensacola for lunch and to tag Mama Wyatt’s car with window chalk messages.

We stayed at the Beau Rivage because Scarlett LetHerHaveit’s dad hooked us up with rooms. Awesome! Once we got settled in; Wyatt, Debo and I went down to the casino. None of us had ever gambled before, so we decided to stick with the nickle slots. After I lost three dollars (I’m such a high roller), I cashed out. Debo ended up cashing out after a few dollars as well, but Wyatt ended up winning about $11. Famished after out brief gaming experience we joined Coach, Heidi Bruiser, Morbid Mangler, JennaRoll Mayhem and a few other girls at the Terrace Cafe.

When it comes to derby girls, there is one absolute constant: we’re loud, get used to it. We attracted a few sideways glances from other diners, but the servers were sweet and the service was fantastic. During an early dinner/late lunch, Heidi regailed us with her latest drama. Everyone has one of those friends who has EVERYTHING happen to her or him. They’re sort of a walking Murphy’s Law. Heidi is ours.

She locked herself out of her car (again). Some of her luggage was still in it, so coach and Jenna bought her a few essential items. She was a little bummed that she had planned her wardrobe around us wearing our pink and black shirts only to realize at the last minute that we were wearing green. She had her green shirt but everything else in her bag was pink. “I’m going to look like a watermelon,” she said. I <3 Heidi! She’s my favorite hippy aside from my best friend Meg.

After dinner, we started getting ready for the game. Nicold Asice and I weren’t playing, but we were volunteering to help with penalty tracking and timing. I wield a menacing timer if I do say so myself. After everyone was dressed, we headed down to get our cars from valet parking. It was cold outside, so we all huddled together until our cars came. As our cars pulled up one by one, we cheered “PCRD! Skate, fight, drink!” until each car load pulled off. Guess how many weird looks we got from that one. A bunch of girls in matching t-shirts sporting strange makeup and fishnet stockings screaming a chant at the top of their lungs is bound to attract attention. But at the Beau Rivage, multiply that by about 50.

The bout was held at Skate Zone in Ocean Springs. Every venue has a different track, but this one was weird even by derby standards. It looked like tiles of particle board laid down and painted smooth. This made the track quite slick except for spots where chunks had been chipped away.

Capt. Howdya Bruise was our head ref. After the first few jams it was clear that the Mississippi refs, while well meaning, were still fuzzy on many of the rules. Several times, Bruise had to straighten things out for both teams.

Mississippi hasn’t played many games yet, but already they have some clear star players. Edie Coli, Dark Fairy and Dee Sniper certainly gave us a run for our money, especially Dark Fairy. When I saw Mississippi play Mobile last year, Dark Fairy was proving herself to be a solid blocker as well as a quick jammer. Unfortunately, Slammy is a force to be reconned with, and she took out Dark Fairy a little too hard. Fairy ended up sitting the rest of the game out with a hurt ankle. Slammy just doesn’t understand how to play nice.

In the end, PCRD won 122 to 62. Though Mississipi fought valiently, they were no match for Mary Murder’s sweet jamming skills or for the powerhouse blocking combination of Scarlet LetHerHaveIt and Phoenix Rising. Watching girls go down against Phoenix was poetry in motion. I watched several girls try to knock her down, and it ended up turning into a domino effect: one girl would hit Phoenix, bounce off and knock three girls on her own team down instead.

The night came to a close with Wyatt Riot breaking two fingers and Phoenix hurting her elbow, but no truly life-threatening injuries. We finished off the evening’s festivities back at the Terrace Cafe. One of the servers was so happy to see us back. He asked us how we did and was ecstatic to hear we had won. Woo hoo! We recruited another fan.

Playing Mississippi was a great experience, and I can’t wait to play them again in April! Bring it on, double or nothing!

About Me

I'm a fourth generation Floridian. I have degrees from Chipola Junior College (when it was still a junior college) and the University of West Florida. When I was at UWF, I lived off of exit 13. Back in Panama City, I began working at News 13 on November 13th, 2006. Thirteen has proved to be my lucky number. Last year, I joined the Panama City Roller Derby League. When I'm not providing the Panhandle with the latest news, I'm tearing up the track with over 20 other roller girls, two of which are also News 13 employees. I'm sure I drive everyone at work insane with all my talk of derby. But hey, that's how I roll.
