Star Search

Star for a Day - In school, I never hung out with the cool kids and wasn’t much of an athlete. Was smart enough to make good grades, but poor enough in math and science not to qualify as a nerd. Grammer and literature were always more my thing.

I have to admit, though, that I am a sucker for sci-fi and fantasy fiction. When some of the people involved with the Wrath of Con sci-fi convention asked PCRD to help out, I was ecstatic. Plus, it landed on the weekend of my birthday. What better way to spend my day than surrounded by adorable sci-fi nerds?

Unfortunately, the week of the convention, the team realized it had overextended itself. We backed out on a booth, but several girls decided to go for fun and to pass out flyers for our upcoming bout.

Heather, aka Nicold Asice, and I went Saturday. We were both decked out in our jerseys and trademark fishnets. Once we arrived at the Mariott, where the convention was being held, I put on my skates. Nicold didn’t because she had hurt her knee earlier in the month. I skated around as Nicold kept up on foot. Skating on carpet is a little tricky, especially when it changes texture. The scariest part of skating around the Mariott was the marble floor. Every time I got to the marble entry, I had to pause and gingerly walk out on my toe stops before skating again.

It wasn’t long before locals started recognizing us. I realize derby girls don’t exactly blend in, but I thought it would be a little different at Wrath of Con with all those people dressed as Spiderman, Umbrella Corp. scientists, and Star Trek charcters. We kept getting “You’re derby girls, right?” and “Can I take a picture with you?” I have never felt like such a celebrity. It was great!

We stayed for a few hours talking to people at all the different booths. There were some actors from shows like Battlestar Galatica and Farscape, but I wasn’t really sure what to say, so we never stopped by their tables. We did wander into the game rooms. Nicold impressed some gamers with her World of Warcraft lingo. I think she has two new fans to add to her collection.

After a while, Nicold’s knee started bothering her, so we left. But it was definitely one of the more entertaining ways I’ve spent my birthday.

About Me

I'm a fourth generation Floridian. I have degrees from Chipola Junior College (when it was still a junior college) and the University of West Florida. When I was at UWF, I lived off of exit 13. Back in Panama City, I began working at News 13 on November 13th, 2006. Thirteen has proved to be my lucky number. Last year, I joined the Panama City Roller Derby League. When I'm not providing the Panhandle with the latest news, I'm tearing up the track with over 20 other roller girls, two of which are also News 13 employees. I'm sure I drive everyone at work insane with all my talk of derby. But hey, that's how I roll.
