Home Sweet Home

Where the season’s change but the good people don’t.  I’m visiting my home in Northern VA, soaking in as much fall as I can before going back to sunny Florida.  I never anticipated how much I’d miss watching the leaves change and wearing hoodies.

There is one obvious difference this autumn though, besides the lack of me hanging around for Halloween decorations and apple-picking.  There’s a drought.  One so obviously detrimental I noticed it from the plane.  I remember waking up on my early flight, opening my groggy eyes to try and find my house below (which I thought I saw about 30 times) and I saw parts of the Potomac River which to me looked strangely brown and dirt-like from above.  Not being very experienced with analyzing geography in general, much less from 20 thousand feet, I didn’t think much of it.

On the drive home from the airport however, we passed a red sign for mandatory water restrictions and my mom mentioned they hadn’t had any rain in 34 days.  We’ve had droughts before but I saw first-hand what a difference the worst drought in about 10 years could make when I went hiking along Great Falls, which currently, are not so great.

One picture was taken in March, the other during my visit this October.

The hike was still wonderfully beautiful, and in a strange way more peaceful because there were no sounds of rushing water.  It rained for the first time in over a month two days after my arrival.  I told everyone I brought a bit of Florida’s weather with me.

Tomorrow I’ll have to say goodbye to my cat (who’s been following me around the house relentlessly despite their reputation for independence,) and go back to beaches and palm trees, which I’ll admit I don’t have a problem with.  Maybe I’ll bring back a few leaves for the room-mates.

About Me

I was born and raised just outside the nation's capital in northern Virginia, and recently graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a major of Broadcast Journalism and minor in International Relations. I studied abroad for a while in Italy and also traveled to Shanghai, China for a journalism class. During college I worked at CBS6 in Richmond, VA as well as FOX5 in Washington D.C. I'm glad to be in sunny Florida and look forward to making Panama City my home for the next few years...
