Palm Trees and Pine Trees

This is a picture from Jessi Chapin's News13 Blog
The holidays are one of my favorite times of the year and with Thanksgiving come and gone, I’m roping everyone into Christmas tasks this weekend. It will be my first Christmas away from home, and I already had my first Thanksgiving away from the chilly sweater-weather of the north. I spent my Thanksgiving vacation at Disney World where for the first time I saw a combination of palm trees and pine trees, summer heat and holiday decor. I couldn’t quite believe my eyes when I first walked into the Magic Kingdom to see the castle covered in icicle lights and a 12-foot tree with Mickey ornaments lighting up the night. Seeing all of the characters in their festive attire throwing fake snow while I was still wearing a tank-top was like living an oxymoron.

Another holiday tradition-Black Friday- also had me turned upside-down this year but for different reasons. I made my first appearance as a reporter on News 13’s morning show! I braved the crowd (and nearly got run over several times) at 5am to do live shots from Toys-R-Us. Let’s just say I’ve never seen so many moms on a mission, nor had a harder time getting anyone to stop their shopping and talk. I apologize to the man I did convince to do the live interview, because I think he got in major trouble with his wife for slowing her down. When the madness was over I tried my own hand at shopping and even though I didn’t wait overnight in front of Best Buy I think I fared pretty well.

Today my room-mates and I took Christmas card pictures at the beach so we can brag about our warm weather via holiday tradition. I’m sure my mom will laugh as she reads it in her layered sweaters next to our tree. We’ve also been hard at work making ornaments, (the benefits of living with 2 artists is that theirs actually look pretty!) they’ll go on our real tree because I will not tolerate a fake Christmas.
