Trying the Trolley - Day 1

Day 1:

Often times, volunteering to be the subject of your stories as a report can get you into trouble.  In college, I found myself sleeping on the ground and running Army obstacle courses for a story on our ROTC program after raising my hand.  Last November, I lived a day without anything made in China for a sweeps story.  This week, I’ve given up my car.

That’s right, I’m putting our public transportation to the test, and today was the first exam.  At first, I thought going to work and doing daily tasks using the Bay Town Trolley would get me lost and confused.  After waking up and catching it this morning with no problems, and transferring to work successfully, I’m beginning to realize the benefits of the system.

Using the trolley has its ups and downs.  I was late for work this morning because the trolley’s schedule and mine don’t coincide.  But, there were stops right in front of my apartment complex and workplace, allowing me to get there easily while saving gas money.  My boss didn’t mind too much.  After all, it was my first trolley day.

I also took the trolley to run errands like going to the bank and getting groceries.  This was probably the most difficult task, making me thankful that my diet consists largely of chips and cookies.  If I’d bought more than 2 bags of groceries I probably wouldn’t have been able to carry them home.  Though the trolley stops near my house, it only comes once an hour so it wasn’t worth waiting and riding a few blocks down the road.  I chose to walk in the July afternoon all the while thinking, “it’s a good thing I didn’t buy ice cream.”

All in all, it wasn’t as hard as I’d pictured.  I thought it would involve a lot more walking and waiting, but with the right schedule and route maps I made it work.  We’ll see if the rest of the week passes the test.
