It’s the busiest time of the year!

Ok, I admit it:  I’ve woefully neglected my blog lately.  It’s not that I don’t care about the 3 of you who read it regularly.  It’s just life has been so busy that I’ve literally not had any time to THINK about what to write about, let alone WRITE about it.

So you’ll all have to forgive me.

It’s been a whirlwind since I last wrote on Thanksgiving Day.  And here I am again, writing on Christmas Day, probably one of THE slowest days in the news business.  On Christmas Eve, I at least had two shows, the 5:00 and 6:00, to worry about.  Today, I only have one, the 10:00, which is delayed by 8 minutes for some reason or another.

This is the second year in a row I’ve worked on Christmas.  I’ve also worked the past three Thanksgivings that I’ve been with the station.  It’s just how the business works.  Just like firefighters, law enforcement, EMS, and all their dispatchers have to be at work round-the-clock, the newsroom always has to be staffed, even if it is just one person.

For most of today, there were only 4 people in the entire building.  Two of us counted as the news department.

I don’t really mind working Christmas.  My family is in Georgia, and after agreeing to work the holiday so 4 of my coworkers could have the day off, I told my parents to stay in Georgia.  I get over a week of vacation (and New Year’s off), so that’s what makes it worth it to me.

I called my parents, my fiancé, and the rest of my family, and I texted/emailed many of my friends to wish them a Merry Christmas.

It’s just a day where everyone seems to be in a good mood, although there are some frustrations.  The hotline where the Weather Watchers call in their temperatures and conditions has been broken all weekend, and we can’t get it fixed until after the holiday.  Plus, it’s pretty boring when there’s not much going on except trying to figure out what good movies are on TV.

It’s been a pretty exciting month, though.  I’ve been to a few Christmas parties; my friends and I got together and threw one, girls only.

I also got to ride on the U.S.S. Mesa Verde, the newest ship in the Navy’s fleet.  It was really a once in a lifetime experience to be able to explore the ship and see how the crew has to live once they’re at sea.  I’ve developed a new respect and appreciation for all the space I have in my one bedroom apartment!  It was a great experience, but it was definitely a chilly one!  We all almost froze as we scrambled to see all of the ship.  We did get to sit in the captain’s chair though!

Anyway, I’ve got to get ready for the 10:00 show, but after tonight I’ll be tidying up my apartment and getting ready to head home.

See you all in the New Year!  Happy 2008! :-)

About Me

I was born and raised in the hills of northeast Georgia, in a little town called Gainesville near the sparkling waters of Lake Lanier. My parents are Vietnamese immigrants who came to the U.S. more than 20 years ago. The sacrifices they've made for me to have a better life have made them my inspiration. I feel extremely honored that you've chosen to put your trust in me. I'm happy to be here in Panama City, and I look forward to getting to know you.
