FCAT

While the FCAT is an important tool for ensuring students and schools are one track, the weight given to the scores of this test is perhaps too extreme. My son finished the 07-08 school year with a 3.0 gpa, with only one C on his report card. However, because he score low on the FCAT math, he has to attend summer school and pass a proficiency test or he will be retained in the 8th grade.  He is upset because he worked hard all year to keep good grades.  Is it right to fail a child simply because of FCAT scores?  Maybe this is why so many kids would rather quit school...if their best isn’t good enough, why try?
