Panama City, Fla. - Surgeons are making advancements in surgery techniques every day. One Panama City orthopaedic surgeon is making rotator cuff surgery easier for his patients.
David Lewis has injured his rotator cuff on both sides of his body. He had surgery on one of his shoulders using an older technique, but for his most recent injury, he visited Dr. James Talkington. Dr. Talkington says he does most of his rotator cuff surgeries arthroscopically, “...with tiny slits in the skin.” This is different than the older technique, which resulted in large muscle splitting incisions.
Dr. Talkington says older techniques also included suture knots to tie the tendon back to the bone. He now uses a knotless technique that secures the tendon more tightly to the bone.
Lewis says he prefers the arthroscopic surgery “...because it’s faster,” and he was able to return to work faster. All patients should talk to a doctor about the best options for them.
