Apalachicola Forfeits Seven Games

TALLAHASSEE - It’s more bad news for Apalachicola athletics.  Earlier this year the Sharks did not have enough players to field a varsity football team.  Now, a mistake has forced the basketball team to forfeit its first seven games.

The sharks were on top of their division with a 6-1 record.

“There was a mistake made,” head coach Joe Hayes said.

Two players did not meet academic eligibility forcing Apalachicola to forfeit its first seven games making the team’s record 0-7.  As of Thursday, the Sharks record stands at 4-8.

“Two men signed a contract, we thought they were eligible,” Hayes said.  “Later we found out the eligibility was incorrect.”

The forfeited games nullify four Class 1A District 3 wins.  The loses make it all but impossible for the team to repeat as the regular season district champs.

“Everyone comes on adversity,” Apalachicola senior Mackenzie Williams said.  “We just have to overcome it.”

Under the guidance of Coach Hayes the sharks have won four straight season district championships.

“It’s been frustrating on the stand point of a record,” Hayes said.  “But we just look as it as a record.”

The two ineligible players did not meet the required 2.0 grade point average for the previous semester which was the second semester of the players’ freshman years.  Had the issue been resolved prior to the opening game Hayes would have had a chance to avoid the loses by not using the players in question.

“It’s an unfortunate error on our part.  I feel bad for the two players, I feel bad for the team to get stuck with 7 loses,” Hayes said.  “But again, we’re positive, we’re moving on.

“We are in last place in the District, but this season is not over by any means.”

Once the second semester begins, the two ineligible players will regain eligibility if their grades meet standards.  If that’s the case, the Sharks could be very dangerous come playoff time.

But think what could have been.  Without the loses, Apalachicola would be 10-2.
