Byas Blows on by…
PANAMA CITY- “I’m just visualizing what I’m going to do, visualizing my first 200 and my second 200, visualizing my cut at the blocks and visualizing how I finish. Just thinking about all the technical stuff you need to know about the race,” said Bay High senior Jordon Byas.
When it comes to knowing the technique of running track, Bay High senior Jordon Byas is a whiz.
Byas is the defending Class 3A 400 meter dash state champion, but this season, the bulls-eye on his back will be from athletes in the 2A Class. The Tornadoes are making the move down from 3 to 2A.
It should be a challenge for Byas, but he has what it takes.
“He’s been fast period. I’ve known him since 6th grade. We’ve been running track since then. He’s always had a drive to be the best,” said Bay High senior Justin Manchester.
That drive to be the best is something Jordon’s head coach, and dad, see’s in him, making him a special athlete.
“He’s got heart. As a coach, I can teach guys how to do things, but if they don’t have the heart to push themselves, then I can’t make them be the best they can be,” said Bay head coach Aaron Byas.
“I think I have the heart. There have been times when we are down in races and I have had to kind of step it up. I can usually rise to those occasions and do well in those situations. So, I think I have heart,” Jordon Byas said.
It’s good to have heart in this sport, but for Jordon, he also has to be on his toes at all times, because he’s a state champion, and is always expected to perform like one.
“It brings a little more pressure. I’m really just wanting to run my race. I really don’t care about that,” said Jordon Byas.
“You always have the butterflies the jitters because you want to impress everybody, especially of Jordon because he’s a state champion, everybody is expecting high of him all the time,” said Manchester.
Even with the high expectations, Jordon hasn’t let anyone down. He is still going with the same pre-race routines, and the same thing goes through his mind while he’s blowing by opponents on the track.
“I just think, get it over with. That’s about all you can think about when you’re doing it,” Jordon Byas said.
