Chipola Ladies’ Hoops Sweating in the Summer
MARIANNA - Summer is typically a time for college kids to hit the World’s Most Beautiful Beaches, take a cruise or go to Disney World.
But there’s no time to rest for the reigning state basketball champions. The Chipola College Lady Indians are already dealing with the “4-1-4” summer practice rule.
It’s a rule that prohibits teams from getting a head start on the competition.
“The 4-1-4 rule is four kids, one coach for four hours week,” Chipola head coach David Lane explained.
“It’ll be better for me next year,” sophomore Gekeela Clemmons said. “Be in shape and ready to play.”
The four players in attendance on Thursday afternoon don’t mind missing out on the fun the summer has to offer.
“I chose to come here cause I thought it was the best program,” freshman Jamia Akins said. “You know, I want to win state and national championships.”
“I mean this what we here for, this is what we want to do,” Clemmons said. “It’s not like they’re making us do it. It’s what we’re here for.”
Akins recently graduated from Crestview High School (Crestview, FL). Coach Lane said the best way for the freshman to adapt is to throw them right in.
“It’s a good way for myself and the rest of the staff to kind of gauge their personality, how they learn, how they handle criticism, how they handle praise,” Lane said. “And so, we like to do that.”
The team has six players coming back from last year’s championship squad. Five players were lost to graduation; four of those were post players. So the lack of size could be a factor to winning back-to-back championships.
“In the summer, that’s when championships are won and lost,” Lane said. “I think you build towards a championship. You put yourself in position to win a championship, but during the season is when you learn how to win championship games.”
The first official day of full-team practice is Oct. 1st.
