Chipola Wins World Series Opener
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Chipola College’s baseball team is still alive and well in the 50th Annual NJCAA Division I Baseball World Series.
The Indians (37-17), who traveled the furthest of any team in the tournament, won their opening game 11-5 against Iowa Western (42-17) Saturday morning at Suplizio Field.
It’s the school’s first-ever win in the World Series. Chipola pounded out 15 hits, including two Tom Hatcher home runs.
“This is kinda a small park to left field, about 300-305 down the left field line, the two balls Hatcher hit would’ve been out of any where,” Chipola head coach Jeff Johnson said. “[Hatcher] really had a good day today and broke it open for us twice.”
Chipola nearly won the game in the eighth inning by the eight-run rule, but Iowa Western platted a four-spot.
The turning point of the game was the fourth inning when Chipola pitcher Drew Parker got out of a bases loaded jam.
“Oh gosh here we go,” Hatcher said. “Then all of the sudden, Drew makes some real good pitches and he gets us out of it.
“I’m sitting there like, “Wow,” we have a real good chance of winning this game. Then right after that we scored, then we just kept the momentum going for the rest of the game. it was great!”
Chipola advanced to play Spartanburg Methodist Monday at 6:30 CST.
