Super Bowl Coaches Making History

Super Bowl XLI will be one for the ages.  It’s a win-win situation.  No matter who wins on Feb. 4 in Miami, history will be made.

When the Chicago Bears beat the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, Chicago head coach Lovie Smith became the first African-American head coach to coach in the big game.  To sweeten the deal, a few hours later Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy became the second when Indy survived a thriller against the New England Patriots.

Dungy was way past due to make his first Super Bowl appearance.  If you remember, the year after Dungy was fired from Tampa Bay, the Bucs won the Super Bowl.  Last season, the Colts were a shoe-in for the big one with a 15-1 record.  But that’s the year Dungy’s son committed suicide.

Smith is the lowest-paid coach in the NFL.  You can bet that will change next year.  Smith is only in his third year with “Da Bears” and is already making a name for himself.  He was named the Associated Press NFL Coach of the Year for 2005 after becoming the fastest head coach in Bears history to lead the team to a division title.  And this year… will wait and see if Lovie can add to his resume.

Indy is 7-point favorites over Chicago.

Who do you think will win?
