Hard Work Pays Off!

PANAMA CITY- “It’s pretty cool to know that your hard work has paid off, and it’s just really cool going to big competitions and winning,” said 12-year-old gymnast Haylan Hubbard.

“It felt really, really cool, because I never though we would win something that big before,” said 10-year-old gymnast Rose Piorkowski.

“It feels really good, because it is just us three and we work really hard and we push each other and it feels really good to go out and win something really big like that,” said 15-year-old gymnast Lexie Routt.

Indeed it was a big win for the Level 8 team from Gymnastics Plus, taking home a state title, and then having all three girls qualify for the regional tournament, which was held in Chattanooga, Tennessee earlier this month.

For any team to be successful, the athletes involved have to push each other, and that’s what this team does.

“I guess it is competitive, but we always push each other to do more skills and get more comfortable with it,” said Piorkowski.

“We’re kind of in different age levels, so, we kind of push each other. If someone stumbles a little, we let them know it’s ok, keep it up we’ll fix it,” said Routt.

“We cheer each other on, and like, every time we’re doing something, we give each other corrections if they ask for it,” Hubbard stated.

The team has been cheering on Haylan Hubbard a lot this season. Hubbard finished first all around for her age division at the state meet, and she finished second all around in the USAG Region 8 Championship, winning the uneven bar competition.

“It was like awesome. I would have never dreamed that I could do that,” said Hubbard.

Her teammates realize how much of an asset she is to the group.

“She’s really very competitive, but in a good way. She’s also very supportive and she’s really a hard worker,” said Routt.

“She’s a really, really good teammate. She’s one that supports you a lot, and she likes everybody in the gym,” said Piorkowski.

Haylan’s friends outside of the gym might not know much about the competitions but they know about a state title.

“Sometimes they don’t know some of the things that I tell them, like the hard names of the skills, but when I tell them that I won a state championship, they are like, wow, that’s really cool,” stated Hubbard.

For all the girls, they are putting in the hard work for one reason, college scholarships.

“I would love to get that college scholarship. I would be very happy if I did,” said Piorkowski.

“We definitely want those college scholarships and that would be great, because it’s all about getting to college and stuff,” stated Routt.

If I ever got my college scholarship, which I hope for, I would probably want to go to elite, which is like a higher level of gymnastics. It’s harder, a lot harder,” said Hubbard.
