Home Sweet Home for Lady ‘Dores
PANAMA CITY
Gulf Coast Community College softball coach Susan Painter said the it’s just great to be home and all 20 of her player can second that.
Gulf Coast swept it’s double header against North Florida, 10-3 and 15-1. The wins clinched a state tournament berth for GCCC.
The Lady Commodores (42-13, 12-4), ranked fifth in the state and seventh in the nation, finally played a game at Joe Tom King Field after playing 16 games on the road. Their last home game before Saturday was back on March 20.
GCCC Baseball Edges Chipola
MARIANNA
The Chipola baseball team clinched the Panhandle Conference Title on Friday night beating Gulf Coast 7-3. With five games left on the schedule, the Commodores entered Saturday’s play with a second place tie.
But they finished the day all alone in second place.
Gulf Coast (28-16, 11-10) beat Chipola 4-3, despite only managing two hits.
Pensacola also lost to Tallahassee.
Bodybuilding & Fitness Championships
PANAMA CITY
Bulging muscles and beauty were on display for the 29th annual NPC Southern USA Bodybuilding Championships and Shannon Dey Figure and Fitness Classic at the Marina Civic Center.
Over 100 individuals were entered for the event, which is a level five qualifier. The competition returned to the Civic Center for the first time since 2002.
Panama City’s Jamie Stang won the women’s overall. While Panama City’s Richard Branham cleaned house. He won the over-40 heavyweight and the over-40 overall.
ZAPS PRO-AM SKIM JAM
PANAMA CITY BEACH
This weekend, skim boarders from all over the world are calling our beaches home. The 9th Annual Zaps Pro-Am Skim Jam is the largest skim board competition in Northwest Florida.
Over 120 skim boarders are entered into eleven classes. The way a competition like this works, five judges watch a handful of skimmers for eight minutes.
Skimmers are looking for the biggest wave they can get and the more manuvers they can pull off, the more points they get.
“What they do is they throw the board down,” event organizer Tony Johnson said. “They enter the water at the shallow area and work their way to the deep area. and hit these shore break as it comes to the shore.”
