It’s Official: Meet The Newest Brave

SOUTHPORT, Fla. - Mosley High School Alum, Cody Johnson’s life has changed drastically over the last 48 hours.

As of Tuesday, he’s a millionaire!

That’s when he inked the dotted-line to play for the Atlanta Braves rookie-level team.

There’s no question about which Major League team Johnson and his father wanted to be drafted by.

We all like the Braves,” Cody’s father, Johnny Johnson said.  “Cody sat in front of the televison, cheering on the Braves when he was just a little fella.”

The Braves had six picks out the first 72 and took Johnson with the 24th pick in the first round.  The rest of Atlanta’s draft was dominated by pitchers.

“We were sitting in front of computer for the draft at noon,” Johnson said.  “My name was called at 12:15, it’s the exciting time of my life!”

Johnson’s pro career will begin in the Rookie Gulf Coast League, playing in Orlanda, Fla., at Cracker Jack Stadium, a ballpark he’s already familiar with.

“Cody’s come full circle,” his mother, Barbara Johnson said.  “At 14-years-old, he played in the AAU baseball national championship in Cracker Jack Stadium.”

Barbara scans through the scrapbook, pointing and smiling.

“Here he is in the dugout… when I took these pictures, I was hoping they would have a special meaning; and they do.”

She then looks at a picture of her son playing at Turner Field in Atlanta, and points to the seats three rows behind home plate.

“In three to four years, we’re going to be watching him in that batter’s box; hitting for the Braves!”

In his senior season at Mosley, Johnson boasted a .524 batting average, 13 homeruns and knocked in 39 runs.

With numbers like that, he’s sure to get attention.

In 2005, Johnson won the Jackie Robinson Award, signifying the National Player of the Year, along with several Most Valuable Player awards, including the East Cobb League (Marietta, Ga.) MVP honor.

Johnson credits the accolades to hard work, dedication and desire.

In turn, that competitive drive awards him with the big bucks, around $1.3 million to sign!

“I’ve never been around that type of money,” Johnson said.  “It’s an unreal amount of money to me, I don’t even know what to say.”

Local Atlanta Braves scout Al Goetz said Johnson should make an impact on the major league level in three to four years.
