Lietzan Represents Scottish Culture in Highland Games
PANAMA CITY - “They may take our lives, but they’ll never take our freedom!”
Most of us have heard that famous quote from Scotsman William Wallace just before going to war with the English in the movie “Braveheart”.
Scottish athletics originated as training events for the military or as testing grounds to choose the King’s guard.
We may have found the next guard. Dawayne Lietzan is Panama City’s three-time defending champion at the 15th Annual Scottish Highland Games at Grace Presbyterian Church.
Lietzan is a native of Dothan, Ala., and of German decent. Not Scottish. But he represents the culture well, from his tattoos right down to the kilt.
“My girlfriend’s daughter calls it a man skirt,” Lietzan said. “It was a little strange to begin with. You kind of walk around in a pleaded skirt basically. It’s plaid though so it’s pretty.”
A big guy calling his skirt pretty doesn’t seem to bother the fans either.
“I don’t see anything wrong with big guys wearing skirts,” Charles Eckl said watching from the stands. “I wear shorts. So there’s not too much difference.”
Lietzan is a former pro-wrestler, standing 6”4’, 295 lbs. He said that the 22 lbs. stone throw is his favorite event.
“Nothing in the gym you can do to simulate these,” Lietzan said. “We make our own weights and go out there and throw, repetition.”
He wrestled in the WCW and the WWE for ten years, but wear-and-tear on his body forced him to retire.
“I wanted to stay active and competitive,” Lietzan said. “I love the Scottish culture. Got into this and been doing it for 6 years now.”
He also mentioned that he represents a close friend of his, Fin Macgregor, when he competes. That in-part makes him family.
Lietzan’s championship run was snapped on Saturday in Panama City. He finished in second place, three points behind Brian Burnett from Tallahassee.
