National Signing Day 2008

Every big tackle, touchdown, interception or sack is a big deal to a high school football player, and today is a day that student athletes get to trade in those stats to sign a dotted line for the college of their choice. Yes, national signing day is a great time in their lives indeed.

SPRINGFIELD- Two rams signing to continue on with their football careers today.

Offensive lineman David Hate will be heading up to Montgomery, Alabama, to become an Alabama State Hornet.  Hate was a mainstay on both the offensive and defensive lines at Rutherford during his career.

“I’m hoping to probably go up there and start my first year, if not; they’ll probably red-shirt me. That will give me five years to get my masters degree. If they red-shirt me, I’ll just play as hard as I can to get that starting spot,” said David Hate.

Joining Hate in the signing process was running back Reggie Turner.  He signed to play with Edward Waters College out of Jacksonville. Turner will be doing in college what he did in high school, carrying the football, and he feels blessed about his opportunity.

“I don’t believe I could put it into words, I’m so excited, to go off after high school and just keep playing football. It’s a great honor and I’m really fortunate. I’m blessed, I thank God, I’m really fortunate,” said Reggie Turner.

LYNN HAVEN- Over at Mosley High School in Lynn Haven, a trio of Dolphins signed on the dotted line today.
They include quarterback and cornerback John Darwin, who made a last minute decision just last night to sign with Jacksonville University.

Linebacker Patrick Bane will head to Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he will play Ivy League ball for Harvard University.

Lineman Chase Bowers will play for legendary coach Howard Schnellenberger, as he signs with the Owls of Florida Atlantic University.

These three players were instrumental in leading Mosley to the county title last season. Today’s signings make 18 players who’ve signed college football scholarships in the last three years at Mosley.

“They’re all great students, great kids, they excelled both on and off the field, and I’m sure a lot of our success should be attributed to them,” said Mosley head coach Perry Brown.

PANAMA CITY- We move to Bay High, Tornado Jordon Byas, the running back/safety signed to play with the Duke Blue Devils.

Byas will line up at safety for the Blue Devils. This past season he recorded six interceptions for the Tornadoes and on offense he averaged an impressive 7.4 yards per carry.

“Well, Duke is a good academic school and when it all boils down to it, academics is what’s key, that’s pretty much why Duke,” said Jordon Byas.

Joining Byas today was Justin Manchester, who committed to the Air Force Academy, but not to play football for the Falcons, but to run track. Manchester will run the 400 hurdles. He has already beaten the current 400 hurdles record at the Academy.

“I had not originally wanted to become a Falcon because the military kind of scared me a little bit, but after I talked with my parents and Colonel Byas and after I went up there and visited, I realized the pros definitely outweighed the cons and I figured it would be better for me in the long run,” said Just Manchester.

PANAMA CITY BEACH- Over on the beach at Arnold High School, one Marlin inking his name today, wide receiver Erin Williams.

Williams signed to become a Warrior at Webber International University in Babson Park, Florida.

Williams says the coaching staff is looking for him to be a receiver, but he also might get time at running back.  He is the 23rd Marlin to get a football scholarship.

“It felt good; I got a big burden off my shoulder. I was wondering where I’m going to go, what I’m going to do, and now I know, and it felt really good to let it go. It’s nice knowing what I’m going to do after high school. I’m not undecided, I know I’m going to go to Webber and get my masters in business and it feels great, it feels good,” said Erin Williams.

BLOUNTSTOWN- Linebacker Ryan Baker signed with the National Champion LSU Tigers, defensive back Jon Lockhart will be a Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket and quarterback Cory Cox will play for D-2 powerhouse North Alabama.

OTHER SIGNINGS

J.J. Laster will be heading to Jacksonville University to carry the ball for the Dolphins.

Vernon High’s Gio Works is heading over to Nicholls State to play for the Colonels.

Former Port St. Joe standout, Jordan McNair, signed today to play for the Golden Eagles at Southern Miss.

And former Mosley running back, Enrique Davis, who signed with Auburn on last year’s signing day, and spent the past year at Hargrave Military Academy, signed with the Ole Miss Rebels.
