Oh Brother
BRISTOL- Football coaches love for their teams to play together like family, but what if some of your key players really are family? It’s something the Liberty County football team knows all about.
The McCray last name is a very familiar name with Liberty County fans.
The Dawgs currently have two sets of McCray brothers. Jarek and Jordan and Keith and Kevin, who are twins.
“They are real competitors and they love to play and work extremely hard,” said Liberty County Head Coach Grant Grantham.
Competition should be a word known all to well to the McCray’s. Everyday on the field brings some sort of new challenge.
“If I get a pick and I fall, he’ll try to get a pick and run it back for a touchdown. We’re trying to be competitive. Trying to see who will outshine who,”
said senior Jarek McCray.
“Sometimes we make challenges on the field. Who’s gonna get the most tackles, the most yards, touchdowns or the most interceptions,” sophomore Kevin McCray said.
“We try to compete against each other,” said sophomore Keith McCray. “Just because my little brother thinks he is better than me, I have to show him up.”
All the challenges and competitive nature of the McCray’s do not cover up the fact that they are really close on and off the field. They can relate to one another.
“You can talk to them and get to them in a mental sense. Coaches might not be able too, because you’ve been with them ever since they were little kids. We learn from each other,” said Jarek.
Learning from each other is something Jordan, the junior varsity quarterback, can relate too.
“When we practice, I look up to him. I try to follow him in what he does at defensive back or whatever so I can get better,” said Jordan.
“If one’s having a bad day at practice, the others will get on him and it makes practice go a lot better,” Grantham said.
When all the McCray’s playing days are over, I’m sure fans will miss the McCray name just as much as watching them play.
The McCray relatives and Liberty County are off this Friday, but they will return to action next week on the road against Franklin County.
