One-on-One: Sheriff Frank McKeithen
Bay County Sheriff Frank McKeithen says his office takes phone calls every week from residents complaining about illegal immigrants in the area. At first he was told law enforcement couldn’t do anything about it. But after researching the laws, he discovered that his deputies could respond to the complaints.
The onslaught on condominum construction in the area seems to have brought a large number of undocumented workers to the area. By law, Sheriff McKeithen says his officers can check to see if the contractors have documentation for the foreign workers they’ve hired. The workers are often questioned as well, and in most cases have false ID’s and working papers. Those workers are taken to jail and held for Immigration Officials.
Sheriff Mckeithen says he is well within the law in the recent crackdown on companies using undocumented workers.
