One on One: Sheriff Frank McKeithen

Corrections Corporation of America says it can’t run the Bay County Jail after October. CCA has been in Bay County for more than two decades. After building the new facility and getting it opened in July...it will turn over the keys to Sheriff Frank McKeithen in October.

The Sheriff says it will be a smooth transition.  But it will cost more. One million dollars more than CCA claimed they were going to run it for. Bay County Commissioners approved the budget. They say it is money well spent. McKeithen says the additional money will be used to give raises to the employees at the jail and pay for the high price of medical coverage for inmates.

Sheriff McKeithen says he can run the jail for about $50.dollars per inmate per day. That number is comprable to other counties around the state where the sheriff runs the facility.

He also wants to upgrade the way families are treated when they come to see loved ones. He says they should be treated with respect.
