Port St. Joe Aims For 15th Final Four

PORT ST. JOE, Fla. - Port St. Joe is a small, quiet town with two stop lights and roughly 3,500 people.

On Saturday night, the Sharks play for a 15th State Final Four appearance and you can bet most, if not all 3,500 will be at the game.

“If you want to rob a bank, come to Port St. Joe, ‘cause everybody’s going to be packed in the dome!” head coach Derek Kurnitsky said.  “It will be nuts!”

Kurnitsky, or as he calls himself the poor “Coach K”, doesn’t really want anyone to hold up a bank.  He’s just looking forward to the Sharks opportunity for a ninth state championship.

“It’s a great feeling just coming to practice,” Kurnitsky said.  “I’m not going to have to say anything to the team on Saturday night.  These kind of games, you don’t need a pre-game speech.”

Kurnitsky describes his team as 11 kids on one team with one goal in common.  So is there one player that stands-out? A superstar? Not a chance.

“Most try to stop one guy,” Sharks point guard Ricardo Clemmons said.  “It’s five or eight players for us you gotta stop.  Most people can’t do that.  So if you shut one man down, another man can score.”

“We got from the starting five on the down bench, everybody can score,” Sharks forward Jordan McNair added.

According to Coach K, that’s part of the rich tradition at Port St. Joe, a tradition that’s produced 14 consecutive district titles.

Entering post-season play, the Sharks were 13-14.  Since then, they’ve won four in a row.  Now they’re one win away from the Final Four.

“I told the kids.  Look at the [Florida] Gators last year,” Kurnitsky said.  “They were just the right team at the right time.  That’s kinda what we are, peaking at the right time.”

Port St. Joe will host West Gadsden at 7 p.m. EST Saturday night.
