Skateboarding In The Panhandle

LYNN HAVEN, Fla. - Half pipes, quarter pipes, back walls and rails are just a few of the skateboarding essentials at the skate park at the Renegade Sports Center.

Over the years, skateboarding has been getting a bad wrap with the older generation.

Skateboarding has an image all of it’s own.

From the fashion, the rock music and the slang.  Skateboarders also have the stereotype of being rebellious and associated with deliquincey.

“Is skateboarding a crime?”

“NO!” Skater Michael Redmon said.  “I skate at any business that has something to skate, there’s signs, but there’s ways around it.”

“It’s not all about that,” Skater Cameron Sadowski said.  “Skateboarding keeps you out of trouble, what they say, you can’t believe.”

The kids definitely take risks in exchange for a good time.

“When you fall, you fall pretty hard,” Sadowski added.

Safety of the skaters is a top priority of the skate park.  According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, over 15,000 people have been taken to the Emergency Room due to skateboarding injuries.

“We require everyone to wear helmets,” Renegade owner, Nanette Hitchcock said.  “We’d like for them to wear pads, since most kids fall on their wrists.”

The Renegade Sports Center skate park is open for skater’s Monday through Saturday 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. and on Sunday 12 p.m. - 6 p.m.
