Softball’s Fanatical Parents
PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. - By the signs of support painted on car windows, the girls of summer have arrived in Panama City.
“We paint our cars,” parent of a player on the Texas (Houston) Heat, Tina Griffin said. “You hear us more than you see us, everything’s always better in Texas.”
But a little paint splashed on a window doesn’t even scratch the surface of the what players’ parents go through to cheer on their daughters.
“We get really excited to pump the girls up,” parent Rebecca Green said. “We’re willing to drive all night.”
“Our stomachs are in knots,” McGriff said. “But we keep pumping them up!”
The team from Houston, Texas, drove 10 hours for the 6th Annual USFA Softball World Series at Frank Brown Park. Over 300 teams are playing this week, from 32 countries and three providences in Canada.
This is the second year the Houston Heat have played in our Panama City heat.
“We can play five games in this heat,” McGriff said. “We’re used to it, we like it.”
While Tina McGriff stands in the bleachers, shaking her noise makers, her husband Richard McGriff finds a good spot along the fence to video tape.
“I’ll let them do the cheering,” Richard said. “I’ll take the pictures, they’ll cheer and we’ll have a good time.”
“Do we have a perfect cheer ladies?” Tina asked the other parents. “There is no perfect cheer. We all just sit here and it’s not all about cheering. It’s about being together and supporting out team.”
The championships for all five age groups, ages 10-18, is on Saturday at Frank Brown Park.
