Southport All-Stars Prepare for World Series

SOUTHPORT - The Southport All Stars defeated Sebring 8-4 to win the Dixie Boys 14-year-old State Tournament on Thursday in Grand Ridge.

The team was back on the practice field for the first time since winning state on Saturday night with a three-hour practice.

“We don’t have any weaknesses and we hit the ball real well,” pitcher Ben Devall said.  “We play defense and have good pitching so we should be able to win it.”

It’s the second straight year Southport has won the state tournament.  Now, they have a chance to go back-to-back with Dixie World Series titles.

“This year we’re kind of expected to win,” outfielder Calvin Cox said.  “It’s unlike last year when no one knew who we were or expected anything out of us.”

The team has kept it’s core players together from last year with ten of it’s 13 players returning.

“This is the best hitting 14-year-old team I’ve seen,” Coach George Husum said.  “We really didn’t hit the ball real well in state this year.  But, when they put they’re hitting shoes on and they hit it like they can, they’re pretty tough to beat.”

Southport travels to Aiken, S.C., for the Dixie Boys World Series starting Aug. 4.
