Southport To Play In World Series
SOUTHPORT, Fla. - As some students head back to class, other students head to the baseball diamond.
The Southport 13-year-old team qualified for the Junior Dixie Boys World Series in Grand Prairie, Texas, and want to prove that everything’s bigger in Texas. Even a championship for the small town of Southport.
“I was very cocky,” Assistant Coach Louis Consoli said. “I know our boys are ready to perform. We step on the field and continue to hit.”
Coach Consoli knows his Southport team has talent. Just look at the run production from the state tournament in Sebring, Fla.
Southport went 6-0, outscoring their opponents 77-19. Including run-rule victories in three of the six games and annihilating Sebring in the state championship game 18-5.
“We just try to hit fastballs,” Southport player Jeffrey Pitts said. “When we get two strikes, we just put the ball in play.”
“From our smallest guys to our biggest, if we flip flop the line-up, we’d probably get the same results,” Consoli said.
Consoli added that this team was put together to win a championship. Despite only playing about a dozen games together as a team doesn’t leave much time to gel. But practicing almost 30 hours a week will help. Consoli said that this is one of the most prepared team in the area.
“A lot of the guys play on weekends or travel teams,” Consoli said. “They love the game, they’d play everyday if you let them.”
The up-coming World Series features teams from 11 states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, North Carolina, Louisiana, Tennessee, and two from Texas.
“They’re all state champs just like us,” Pitts said. “It’s going to be pretty good competition, we just need to keep hitting.”
Southport’s first game is Saturday against host team Grand Prairie.
