Spring Football Camps: Arnold, Rutherford
PANAMA CITY BEACH - There will be several high school football games across the panhandle on Friday night.
Arnold High School had a light workout this Thursday afternoon as the team prepares for Mosley in Friday’s glorified scrimmage game.
The biggest change for the Marlins will be at quarterback. Wide receiver Leonard Dubuisson replaces last year’s starter Johnny Gray, who had shoulder surgery earlier this year. Rutherford transfer Coty Sage also could see some snaps.
Coach James Hale said that his Marlins need to replace their entire offensive line and these early practices have given him cause for concern.
“We’ve got some people banged up, beat up,” Hale said. “We’re hurting right now on the offensive and defensive lines.
“Everywhere else we’re pretty good. Good linebackers, good secondary,” Hale added. “I think we have really good skill players, good quarterbacks, so we feel good about everything else.”
Arnold kicks off against Mosley at 6 p.m. at the Mike Gavlak Sports Complex.
SPRINGFIELD - At Rutherford High School’s spring camp, the Rams are preparing for Bay High School.
After a 1-9 season last year, Rutherford is looking for players that want to play the game. Coach Greg Rivers said that a big problem last season was the lack of players. He’s seen a great improvement this spring with 61 players coming out the first day. However, that number has decreased to 47.
Michael Perry started seven games at quarterback last year, but he’ll have some competition with Cordell Rogers taking snaps this spring.
Coach Rivers said that every position on both sides of the ball is up for grabs.
“We’ve got a lot of holes with only three back on offense and three back on defense,” Rivers said. “We have eight on both sides of the ball we have to fill.
“Each job has been very competitive this spring. Nobody’s job is secure.”
The Rams play Bay Friday at 7 p.m. at Tommy Oliver Stadium.
