Start of a New Era

PANAMA CITY- The Gulf Coast Community College Commodores began their first week of fall practice this week.

This season brings new optimism, new goals, new players and a new head coach.

“I’m happy that I was able to come here and be an assistant for a year and find some things in which I think we can make improvements in this men’s basketball program,” said GCCC head coach Jay Powell.

The Dores’ finished last season with a 7-23 record and making improvements is the key goal building up to this year.

“The young men have been very good.  They’ve been receptive to the changes.  They’ve been receptive to the hard-nosed mentality and the work ethic that we’re trying to instill in them,” said Powell.

That work ethic and mentality has to start with the coach, and the players feel that Powell is the perfect fit for the program.

“We couldn’t pick a better person, Coach Powell, he is the perfect leader.  He brings a lot of energy, he give us motivation. He makes us work hard, harder than we did last year.  He basically puts down laws and we abide by them, because we know it will make us a better team,” said sophomore forward Darryl McGhee.

“A lot of intensity, he expects you to bring 100% every practice,” said sophomore guard Ben Vega.

Powell has been a head coach at the high school level before, but this season will mark his first year as the main man for a college program.

“There is a little bit different stress level.  Every single decision rests on your shoulders, and you feel that every single decision is a little more important when you’re the head coach,” Powell said.

All of Powell’s decisions this season will be focusing on success and creating a winning attitude.

“We’re trying to have an optimistic, hard-working attitude and go from there to build on positive things as opposed to looking too much to what has happened in the past here at Gulf Coast,” said Powell.

Some players have already set high expectations for their season.

“Hopefully we’ll win the conference.  It’s going to be tough this year, with new guys, but we’re planning on making some noise this year,” said Vega.

“Win conference, go further than conference of course, have a great team and just have fun,” said McGhee.
