State Champs Looking To Repeat
PORT ST. JOE, Fla. - Port St. Joe raised it’s athletics to the next level last season with state championships in both basketball and football.
But the players know, repeating on the gridiron will be challenging this season. Mainly because of the loss of six all-state players.
“They brought a special element to the team,” senior offensive lineman William Floyd said. “It’s great to have people that have been through the fire and can step up when they really need to.”
That special element is leadership. The Sharks sent 10 seniors off last year with the Class A State Championship. Three of those players, Ash Parker (Fla. International University), Ash Larry (Edward Waters), and Sidney Harris (FAMU) are now focusing on college football.
“Any time a school our size has kids move on we’re tickled to death,” head coach John Palmer said.
According to quarterback Mike Quinn, the Sharks will run the ball to death against their opponents with the majority of the offensive line returning along with fullback Ashley Davis.
But, you can’t forget about Quinn’s arm, having passed for over 1,000 yards last season, and his experience.
“He gained a lot last year,” Palmer said. “He was tremendous in the playoffs, and the poise he showed in the State Championship game coming from behind.”
The Sharks won 13 games last year and only losing one. That one came against rival Blountstown, who just so happens to be the team Port St. Joe plays this Friday.
As for the Sharks 10 seniors, in three years, they have not won a game against Blountstown.
“We’re ready to get the first ‘W’ against them,” Quinn said. “Once we beat them, it’ll release some pressure.”
“I’d definitely like to give it my best shot and see how we do,” Floyd said. “It’s always a big game.”
Port St. Joe and Blountstown kick-off at 7:30 EST at Shark Field in Port St. Joe.
