Streak of Success

PANAMA CITY- The Panhandle Conference champions in women’s basketball for the last ten seasons has been the Gulf Coast Community College Lady Commodore squad.

With the ‘07-‘08, season coming closer and closer, the question is, do the Lady Dores’ have a good shot this season keeping that streak alive?

“It looks like it’s going to be probably the toughest schedule we’ve had in the history of our program,” said GCCC Head Coach Roonie Scovel.

That’s the word around the Gulf Coast women’s basketball schedule, tough, but handling tough competition is something the team excels at.

Last season, the Lady Dores’ won their tenth straight conference title.

“I thought we had a fantastic season. We got to the region championship and came up a little short, but we’ve been in that region championship, that was our tenth appearance there,” said Scovel.

“Last season was a great season. Won second place in the state tournament versus Chipola. We did pretty well during the season. We made a few mistakes, but we hope to come back strong this year,” said sophomore forward Ashley Ogletree.

This season presents great promise for the Commodores.  The group has six sophomores and seven incoming freshman, who are all aiming high.

“If we get out of these injuries at the moment and we pull it together, we can go far.  The goal is always to win, said freshman guard Ashlee Kelly.

“This season, we are trying to go all the way, clear up some of the injuries and take it as far as we can, nationals hopefully,” Ogletree said.

“I think we are very talented.  We do have the potential to have a lot of success.  Our goal is to try to get to the state tournament,” stated Scovel.

It all goes back to that dreaded schedule and beating those teams that propose a threat.

“Right now, Chipola is probably the team to beat.  They’ve won the region tournament the last three years.  We’ve kind of swapped off winning and they got the better win.  So, we’re trying to stay healthy and just get better at the things we are doing right now,” Scovel said.
