The Arnold Youth Movement

PANAMA CITY BEACH - The Arnold Marlins varsity soccer team is off to another great season with a 13-6-1 record.  But this year’s team is quite different.

Six Marlin soccer players are making the transition from middle school to high school.  That’s six 9th graders getting significant minutes in a game where freshman can be eaten alive.

“When we looked around at each other first day of practice we’re pretty small,” freshman Jeremy Evans said.

Freshman players usually make varsity for a reason and usually because the coach thinks they can handle it.

“That’s what impressed me the most,” head coach Rick Sylvester said.  “It’s their heart and competitiveness; so far it’s working out for us.”

“For us it’s just a lot of fun ‘cause we’re smaller,” Evans said.  “If we lose, people expect it.  But when we win, people might think we’re pretty good.”

But that’s the thing.  The Marlins keep winning.  They’ve won 13 games with a team much smaller and younger.

“It’s kind of intimidating,” freshman Kyle Crowley said.  “But you just got to play with the pain.  You just gotta take a blow and keep going.”

The physical part of the game comes with maturity and the experience comes with playing time.  That’s where senior leadership comes in to help make the learning process run smoothly.

“The whole team has a desire to accomplish goals as a young team,” senior captain Mark Randazzo said.  “I think we fight through that keeping our composure on the field playing the game that we can.”

As of right now, Arnold is second-place in their district only to county rival Bay High School.  These two teams meet next Tuesday night at Tommy Oliver Stadium.

“Most of the teams we play underestimate us,” Crowley said.  “But we comeback and hit’em in the face.  We show’em whose boss.”

With so many freshman, you can’t take anything away from the upper-classmen on the team.  Keeper Patrick Reed (Soph.) plays for the Florida state 4th year, U-15 Olympic team, Striker Tyler Evans (Jr.) leads the team in scoring, Jerimy Crute (Jr.) plays for the Destin Wave select U-17 team.
