The Pirates are Coming
PANAMA CITY BEACH- Next year will bring a whole new level of excitement and entertainment to Bay County. The community will welcome in the Panama City Pirates.
The Pirates are a Premier Development League franchise that have been bought by the owners of the Renegade Sports Center in Panama City.
“We want to build a team that Bay County families and soccer enthusiast can call there own,” said General Manager Carey Turner.
That is the goal for the new Premier Development League soccer franchise, the Panama City Pirates.
The Pirates will be in the PDL, which is an amateur division in the United Soccer Leagues, better known as the USL.
“This is going to be an opportunity for us to showcase Bay County, to be able to show what we’ve got around here. We’ll be bringing in the top level soccer participants to come in and play in this league and it’s going to be a great way to show off Bay County,” said team owner Laird Hitchcock.
“I think the Pirates are not only going to bring a great sporting event for the athlete, but also it’s going to be a family get together. It’s something that everybody in the family can enjoy and come and watch a great, great sport at a different level,” said head coach Al Manzur.
Next year, families and fans will be able to check out the Pirates in action, during a 16 game schedule, featuring eight games at home and eight away contests. The teams will be made up of 24 amateur players.
“These are basically the top amateur college, college Division-I and Division II players in the nation, who play during the summer months to maintain there college eligibility, and still be looked at by MLS and European clubs,” Turner said.
Most feel that Panama City will be a great attraction for these new players.
“It gives them a great house, right next to the beach, beautiful weather, they can practice their favorite sport all year long, and I think it is a great location,” said Manzur.
The new team will also be giving tips and advice to up and coming soccer enthusiasts from around the community.
“We’re going to be offering year-round soccer training, premier camps and clinics under the Pirates umbrella that offer the latest skills, the latest techniques, the newest coaching philosophies that are out there and the oldest ones that work. So, it just basically raises that level of soccer for Bay County residents and Bay County players,” said Turner.
