Title Town (Marianna), Florida
MARIANNA - Chipola College’s baseball team beat Central Florida 12-2 on Tuesday night for FCCAA state junior college baseball championship.
Championships are nothing new for Chipola College. With the latest win, the Indians have become the first school to win state championships in four major sports – women’s and men’s basketball, softball and baseball - in the same academic year.
The baseball team arrived in Marianna on Wednesday afternoon to find their cars painted with congratulatory words.
“I never imagined that all four of us would go,” softball coach Belinda Hendrix said. “It’s amazing how hard we work and how hard the athletes perform for us.”
“We’re just excited,” women’s basketball coach David Lane said. “There’s a lot of good things on athletically and academically at Chipola.
“If we’re going to do something, we’re going to be the best at it.”
It started in March, when Lane’s women’s basketball team beat Gulf Coast Community College for the title. Then the men’s basketball team won the school’s second title on that same night.
Last Sunday, the softball team edged Miami-Dade 1-0 for number three.
“It takes all of them to come together to make this happen,” baseball coach Jeff Johnson said. “But when you got the resources that we have here, it makes our job a lot easier as coaches.”
“I was more nervous for Jeff and Belinda for their state championship games than I was for our state final,” Lane said.
According to men’s basketball coach Greg Heiar, you can expect more great things from Chipola in the future. He said that the college is a hot commodity and an easy sell for recruiting.
“It’s an attractive place for student-athletes to come and be successful,” Heiar said. “The past student-athletes are successful and are having success.”
Chipola still has a chance at a pair of national titles. The softball team competes in nationals next week in plant city while the baseball team competes in the Junior College World Series May 26-June 2 Grand Junction, Colo.
