Tyndall has GAME!
TYNDALL AFB- “If there is a sport, we do it here at Tyndall,” said Tyndall AFB Sports Director Richard Byers.
“I think the base would be a little bit lost without it. It’s a nice stress reliever for your everyday work,” said Lt. Leslie Woll.
That’s how most men and women involved in Tyndall’s intramural sports programs feel about the activities. It’s a stress reliever and a lot of fun.
This co-ed softball league is just one of the many different sporting activities available at Tyndall Air Force Base for the squadrons.
The goal, to promote one big family.
“I think it is great because it gives you a chance to get away from the job and build camaraderie amongst your peers and also all the same principles apply to your workers out on the field. Good teamwork, leadership and just coming out with a win,” said Dwayne Hurt.
“It shows leadership. Everybody can get around on base and learn everybody’s name and get to know each other and have a good time,” said Gary Lorenz.
“It’s like a big family out here for these guys. We have one team that’s been out here for a long time, 601st. These guys have probably been playing together for the last ten years. It gives all the units a chance to get out here and play together and have fun together,” said Byers.
Being able to build that camaraderie with your peers is what it’s all about. It’s a great way to get to know the people in your squadron as well as some outside it.
“Most definitely, I know people on other teams now. It’s great networking opportunity for the whole base. I’m better friends with the people in my squadron that I play with on the team. I talk to them more in the hallways,” said Lt. Woll.
“Half the guys on this team, I really didn’t know before the season. I’ve been here for over a year. Just coming out and being a team player, I’ve gotten to know people and learn my way around base,” said Lorenz.
Let’s face it, with all these different squadrons going head to head against each other, there has to be some trash talk and bragging going on.
“Oh yeah, basketball, softball, out here on these softball fields you are going to get a lot of that. Most of these guys are really in to competition out here. It’s all about bragging rights. Got to be the top, got to be the best,” said Byers.
“Without a question, there is bragging going on, but definitely we are trying to pull it out for Security Forces,” Hurt said.
“You know, anywhere you have competition and teams like this, you are going to have some kind of bragging rights and all that stuff. I guess you just have to come out on top and hopefully you are not the one that is getting dissed on,” said Lorenz.
One interesting note about softball at Tyndall, the base will play host to the Air Force Women’s Softball Training Camp beginning August the 26th.
All-Air Force level female athletes from bases across the world will come to Tyndall to try-out for the official Air Force softball team.
