Wewa Softball Ready For State Semis
WEWAHITCHKA - The Lady Gators of Wewahitchka are making reservations for the State Final Four for the fifth straight season.
On Tuesday, Wewa (23-5) flexed it’s muscle, winning 10-0 against Baker in the 2A Regional Final to take the trip to Central Florida.
It’s been a heart-breaking last four appearances in the state semifinals for the ladies. They were eliminated in the semis three times and lost in the state title game in 2003.
It was Wewa’s eighth consecutive regional final and the last game at home for head coach Charles Fortner, who’s retiring after a 28-year career.
“This year they’re putting out a little bit extra,” Fortner said. “They’re hitting extra, staying after practice. Working good in practice, doing everything we tell them to do.”
Wewa pitcher Samantha Rich did not allow a run in the game against Baker, but she said it’s more than just her stellar performance on the mound.
“We’re hitting the ball really good,” Rich said. “Just all around, in the infield we’re a lot better, stronger arms, stronger bats just everything.”
Wewahitchka takes on Mount Dora Bible next Wednesday in Plant City in the State Semifinals.
