With Douglas Out, ‘Noles Turn To Mims

TALLAHASSEE - Florida State’s men’s basketball team is missing one of it’s main men for the stretch run.  Seminoles’ starting point guard, Toney Douglas, is on the shelf for at least a month with a broken hand.  Junior back-up point guard, Ralph Mims will be the “Maine” man.  That’s M-A-I-N-E.

In his senior season at Brunswick High School in Maine, Mims earned Maine’s Mr. Basketball honor in 2004.  He scored just under 1,916 points in his high school career.  He was the state’s top offensive player.

Now Mims is making his first collegiate appearances in the starting line-up since leaving moving back to the south.  He lived in Pensacola until he was in the eighth grade.

“I try to come in and play a role,” Mims said.  “I can’t be Toney.  Toney is a scorer, he’s our starting point guard.”

Douglas, the team’s second-leading scorer, injured his wrist in a game against Clemson last week.

“I have a lot of confidence in him,” Douglas said.  “I talk to him everyday try to give him what I see on the court and help make him better.”

“He’s staying positive on me so I can stay positive for the team,” Mims said.  “I just need to get us to the position where we can win.”

It’s no secret the Seminoles are going to miss Douglas’ 13.1 points per game, but even the most die hard Douglas fans feel that Mims can step up the challenge.

“He’s one of the fan favorites cause he’s off the bench and tries real hard,” Florida State fan Cleighton Mayo said.  “He was the defensive specialists off the bench in the NIT.  It’s good to see him get his starting job.”

With that starting job, Mims is getting starting job playing time.  In the last two games (Boston College and Georgia Tech), he’s an averaging 37 minutes of court time in a 40 minute game.  All in an attempt to get the Seminoles back to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1998.

A message wrapped around a tattoo on Mims’ right arm sure fits these days in Tallahassee.

“It’s a pit bull with a hat on that says only the strong survive,” Mims said.

Florida State has four games left to play in the regular season.  Douglas is hoping to be healed by early march for the ACC tournament in Tampa.
