Yo Rocky, What Club Should I Use?

DESTIN - Rocky Venn is the guy behind the guy.  He’s been caddying for defending Boeing Championship winner Bobby Wadkins for eleven years of his 25 years in the business.

“You don’t have to be a great golfer,” Venn said.  “You just have to know what to say at the right time.  Sometimes you just have to shut up.”

“Rocky’s like your wife,” Wadkins said.  “One minute you love him.  One minute you wanna drag him behind the jeep.

“He can tell when I got smoke out my ears and it’s time to leave me alone and it’s time to the whip.”

A good caddie can be as powerful a weapon as any club in the golf bag.

“If he’s not hitting the ball correctly, if I could give him just one tip to get him back on track.  That’s my job,” Venn said.

Venn knows the challenges and obstacles of the Raven Golf Course, along with the overall yardage, pin placements and club selection.

“He knows what has to be done.  I know what has to be done,” Venn said.  “And we just go about it our own ways.”

Wadkins and Venn are looking to be the first repeat champions at the Boeing Championship, which is the oldest tournament on the tour.

But, this might be there lucky 13 weekend.  This is the 13th Annual Boeing Championship.  It’s the 13th Champions Tour tournament of the year and Wadkins won the 2006 event with a score of 13-under par.

“We’re both working for the same results,” Wadkins said.  “We’re both trying to be number one.”

“People maybe rooting for, but everyone is out here to make money,” Venn said.  “That’s just the bottom line.  So it’s me and Bobby against everybody.”

After the first round of play on Friday, Wadkins is tied for 26th place at 2-under 71.
