One on One: Bonnie McQuiston

A group of volunteers in Walton County is keeping an eye on the county budget. The Walton Taxpayers Association has been around for 25 years. In the last six years, they have been successfull in getting elected officials to lower the millage rate, four times, so property owners will get a tax break.

Their efforts started before state lawmakers came up with a recent plan to lower property taxes statewide.  The group tries to educate those in office as to the possibilities of cutting the fat. Walton Taxpayers says it’s up to residents to get involved and help commissioners and constitutional officers with their spending.

An example of fat in a budget is consultant studies. President of the Walton Taxpayers Association, Bonnie McQuiston
says last year a study cost a quarter of a million dollars and the proposal wasn’t even used. She says there’s a warehouse full of studies.  She says the taxwatch group believes there needs to be someone in control of such projects for better management of taxpayer dollars.
