One on One: James McCalister
Bay District Schools Superintendent James McCalister is asking for a one mill rate increase in the budget for the next fiscal year. He also wants voters to extend a half cent sales tax for schools that expires in January. Does the school system really need both?
McCalister says the school system does not want to “double dip”. But he says they must have one or the other for capital outlay projects like renovating schools and building new ones. A new K-8 is planned for next year on Panama City Beach, and other area facilities are or will be in need of repair in coming years.
The Superintendent says he asked for the one mill hike as a proposal. Because the school board can not raise the millage if they need more money, only lower it in the proposed budget, he gave them wiggle room. It is up to the board over the next five weeks to look for ways to cut.
McCalister says he feels confident they will lower that millage request. But he is hoping voters will extend the half cent sales tax through a November 6th referendum.
