One on One: Mark Bowen

Over the years, Bay County has gotten wiser. Emergency Operations personnel work year round to prepare for hurricane season. In the old days, most counties just waited until about a month or two before the storm season to prepare.

Mark Bowen is Bay County’s Emergency Operations Center Director. He says people need to get ready now. Stock up on canned foods, water and medicine. Also make sure your car has a full tank of gas. Another part of the process is to have phone numbers ready in case family members are seperated and have a meeting place for after any storm.

Bowen says the American Red Cross reports that only 6% of Floridians considered themselves prepared in advance. That isn’t good. Families need to take stock now, while the weather is quiet. He also reccomends residents get a NOAA weather radio that goes off during severe weather.

You can also pick up a Continuity Plan from the County or Chamber of Commerce, so that your place of business will have a plan in advance as well.
