One on One: Randy Curtis

The Panama City Bay County International Airport is a go. The Army Corps of Engineers issued the final round of permits that will get the new facility off the ground. Airport Executive Director Randy Curtis says it is a complicated and long process to build a new airport. It has been ongoing for around ten years.  Curtis says construction contracts must still be chosen and signed, but that the process is 98% complete.

The airport will be located in West Bay off of highway 388, near highway 79 in Bay County.  It will be the first airport built, from the ground up since 9-11.

Randy Curtis says the TSA and The Department of Homeland Security are working to help make this new airport a model for others, so security will be top of the line.

As for environmental concerns, Curtis says thousands of acres of wetlands around the new airport will be preserved. The $330 million dollar project will be paid for with Federal and State Tax monies, as well as the money from the sale of the current airport. He says the airport authority went into this project with the agreement to never ask Bay County taxpayers to help foot the bill, it is the airport authority’s responsibility.
