One on One: Sen. Don Gaetz

Sen. Don Gaetz of Niceville says if voters pass the January 29th ballot for property tax reform, it will give them billions of dollars in tax savings over five years.

The amendment would increase the current Save our Homes homestead exemptions from $25 thousand to $50 thousand dollars. It would also make it portable for homeowners.

The amendment also creates a ten percent assessment cap for non homestead properties of rentals and second homes. The amendment also creates a tangible personal property tax exemption for businesses.

The Florida Teachers Union and the Florida League of Women Voters are not in favor of the amendment, saying it doesn’t go far enough for tax relief and could create a loss of revenue for education.

Sen. Gaetz is in favor of passing the amendment. Click below to hear why.
