Illegal Dump Site Clean, But, Some Issues Remain
When we last visited a wooded area a couple of months ago at the end of East Baldwin Road in Bay County it was not a very attractive place. The property, owned by St. Joe Company, had gradually turned into an illegal dump site.
For some time, people had discarded furniture, old clothes and other trash on the property. But, that has now changed dramatically. After becoming aware of the problem, St. Joe went to work and has done a superb job of cleaning up the site.
Bay County put up mounds of dirt to prevent anyone from taking trash back to the St. Joe property. But, some nearby residents say that created a new problem. Cindy Doty lives near the entrance of the property and next to a county easement. She says, “They didn’t tell us...I came home one day and this was all like this. When it rains it is a mess...mud everywhere. If they are going to leave this here, come in and do something…put up either fence or some kind of concrete wall not just mounds of dirt.”
But, the question is...are the dirt mounds permanent or temporary? On ‘D’ street, a couple of streets over from East Baldwin, Bay County put up a gated fence instead of dirt mounds to block travel. Will the same thing happen to East Baldwin?
News 13 took that question to Bay County officials. Spokeswoman Valerie Michaels tells us the dirt mounds will remain...no plans now to change them.
As for the gated fence, a couple streets over from East Baldwin, Michaels says the county put that up to make it easier for county officers to access the easement area. However, Michaels encourages any residents with concerns to call these phone numbers. First, you can reach the office of Bay County Roads and Bridges at 784-4050. Or you can call Valerie Michaels at Bay County Community Outreach at 784-6123.
