Lynn Haven Woman Has Issues With Delivery Service
Melissa Gray says she dropped off a shoebox size package on January 3 at the DHL service location in Lynn Haven. She wanted to send it to her brother, Captain Michael Privett, who is serving with the U-S Marines in Baghdad, Iraq. “(DHL) Said oh yes, no problem. Filled out paper work...country is clear to me. Says Iraq …got the APO...captain, it was as clear as I could be. And they took my money. How much? $86.51.”
But, Melissa says she became worried as she tracked the delivery over the next few days. “I realized I had a problem when it went to Bahrain and back to Baghdad and then it went back to Bahrain.” Mrs. Gray contacted DHL and says it took several phone calls to get information. When she connected with the right person, DHL told her the package couldn’t be delivered to her brother.
According to Melissa, “they said three options...I could give them a correct address...which this is the correct address I double checked it. The second option was to have them redirect it to a new address which I don’t have a new address. Or I can abandon it or have it sent back to me for additional cost. When I asked them how much...they said $163 to send it back to me from Baghdad.”
News 13 contacted the DHL Corporate office near Ft. Lauderdale to discuss the problem. They were concerned about the issue and said they would contact Mrs. Gray. She says, “If they didn’t deliver it, I feel like I should at least get the package and money back.”
News 13 has learned that the APO address in question...is the problem.
APO stands for Army/ Air Force Post Office...and is used by the U-S Postal service to ship to troops overseas thru the appropriate military site in Miami, San Francisco or New York and then to its foreign destination.
And, News 13 received a response from DHL Corporate center near Seattle, Washington. DHL does deliver military mail services to troops but cannot deliver to APOs. The message says in part, “DHL has a long-standing relationship with the U.S. military and is proud of its continued commitment to support service men and women stationed overseas.” ... DHL cannot, however, deliver to APO addresses as access to APO boxes is not granted to express delivery companies. We regret that the local staff that accepted this shipment was unaware of the limitations on deliveries to U. S. men and women in Iraq.”
The message goes on to say, however, that DHL is still trying to find some way to get the package to Captain Privette and if that is not possible, DHL will return the package and a full refund to Mrs. Gray.
