Adoption Process at Humane Society of Bay County

The Humane Society is located at 1600 Bay Avenue behind the Panama City Police Department just off 15th street.

News 13 talked with Executive Director Dusty Ferrell about the shelter’s operation.  Here is what she told us:

“Most of our funding comes from events, and of course our adoption fees that we do have...a lot of the money comes from members and people that just donate money.”
What about complaints over the condition of animals up for adoption?
Ferrell says, “when you adopt an animal...when you surrender an animal...let’s start there...when someone brings us an animal, of course we try to take healthy animals...if we can...sometimes people lie...they do...they tell stories...but we bring the animals in...they’re vaccinated...they’re sterilized...they’re watched for their health...and also they’re watched for their temperament...so we try to give you an animal that’s healthy...good temperament...we try to know if they’re good with kids...or other animals...other dogs...other cats...on the occasions it happens we send one out unknowingly that may have an infectious disease could have an intestinal disease...some of these things we can’t diagnose because we don’t have a vet on staff.”

In addition to the maintenance...are there structural problems here that need to be addressed?  Ferrell says, “there are some extreme structural problems in the building right now...the heating and cooling system for one is outdated...it costs a lot to keep it running....the building itself is rusted...we need a new ceiling...we need new insulation...we need new paint...you know there is many things we need and sadly we just don’t have the funding right now.”
