Golf Cart Safety in Panama City Beach

It’s a nice day at the beach and what better way to get there than on your golf cart.  “My golf cart is my pride and joy,” says Val Miserez.  Miserez says he has been riding his golf cart whenever he can since he retired to Panama City Beach a few years ago.  According to Miserez, “gas mileage is great...all electric.”

But, one person e-mailed News 13 saying golf carts should not be on the road.
Are they a safety hazard for motorists on the beach?  Police say they do not appear to be at this time.
Major Dave Humphreys of the Panama City Beach Police Department says, “it doesn’t seem to be a big problem.  It’s not like we’re having a lot of accidents with golf carts involved.” Major Humphreys says the Beach City Council passed an ordinance a year ago.  It allows carts on some streets in Panama City Beach and in certain neighborhoods.  But, that doesn’t mean you can drive a golf cart on Highway 98.  Major Humphreys says, “I think the key here is to keep them on slower speed roads, keep the kids off of them, make sure there are licensed drivers during the daytime and then we will police them like we do anything else.”

For Val Miserez...he says he always plays it safe, “you have to be very careful...look two or three times to make sure… even tough traffic is slow it pays to be careful.”

Major Humphreys says if the golf carts begin to be a problem; the police will go back to City Council to take another look at the ordinance.

News 13 has the list of Panama City Beach streets listed in ordinance number 980 that are off limits to golf cart travel:

East-West streets:
Front Beach Road (State Road 30)
Hutchison Boulevard (Middle Beach Road)
Panama City Beach Parkway (State Road 30-A or Highway 98)
Thomas Drive
South Thomas Drive
North Lagoon Drive

North-South streets:
Beach Boulevard (from South Thomas Drive to Front Beach Road)
Churchwell Road
Beckrich Road
Alf Coleman Road
Clara Avenue
Hill Road
Powell Adams Road
Highway 79

Golf carts shall be permitted to cross any street listed above only at such points as are from time to time designated by resolution of the City Council where authorized, or the FDOT, and marked as crossing points with official language.
