City Residents Want Water Leak Fixed
An ongoing water leak issue has some residents now turning to News 13 for help. The residents tell us they called Panama City Utilities about the problem some time ago and the city responded. But the problem is still there and residents want answers as to when it will be fixed. I get those answers and more in this News 13 Problem Solver report.
Panama City resident Patricia Lynch says she is tired of looking at a water leak on the street in front of her home. Lynch says she got up one morning and noticed water in the street. Lynch says, “Yes, but I didn’t pay it any attention then because I figured they were working the line and eventually they would have it cleared up.”
Utilities officials say the problem is connected to a water main underneath the intersection of East 12th street and Palo Alto Avenue. According to Lynch, “City Utilities came out and put sand around the site to try to divert the water in another direction.”
Rosa Gordon lives next door. She says the water is a hassle for visitors who come to her home. Gordon says, “If you go to get in their car, they get out they got to step in water or 9 out 10 you step in it.” I asked her, “what would you like to see done about this problem? I want it corrected please...since we pay taxes...the city utilities department, water or whatever to come out and fix it. If they don’t fix it, looks like we should be cutting a little tax.”
I spoke with Panama City Utilities Director Ron Morgan and he says there is a plan to resolve the issue. He tells me engineers have discussed how best to make the repairs. Morgan says the leak stems from an underground connection on the water main line and it will be a big project to fix.
Here are the areas affected…from 15th street just East of Martin Luther King, Junior Boulevard down to 7th street at Bay Medical Center. City Utilities plans to prep the site on Friday, January 25th and do the repair work the following day on the 26th.
Utilities Director Morgan says water pressure will be maintained during that time so contamination should not be a concern and boiling water will not, again will not, be necessary. Morgan says any discoloration in the water should clear up in a short time.
