GCCC Cheerleaders Making Noise In Miami

PANAMA CITY, Fla. - “A lot of people don’t realize that it’s a lot of hard work,” Trish Henning, sophomore cheerleader, said. “We don’t just go ‘rah-rah-rah’ and clap.”

Other than the “spirit fingers”, the Gulf Coast cheerleading squad is competing in the Junior College division of the U.S. Cheerleading Nationals in Miami on April 1-2.

There will be plenty of college and all-star competition along with a dozen judges watching every move.

“Once that light comes on, you’re in front of 10,000 people,” cheerleading coach Tessa Garner said. “There’s a lot of pressure, but you don’t have time to think.”

Yard sales, raffles and stunt classes paid the squad’s way to Miami. But preparing for Miami is much different than cheering along the sidelines.

“You have to be very polished, and know where your at,” cheerleader Eddie Johnson said. “Be conscience what you do and go hard, hard, hard. We need to make everything look good.”

The routine for Nationals will be about three minutes in length, involving plenty of cheerleading lingo.

“We do a two-high, a three-high, basket tosses, we can’t forget tumbling! Lots of tumbling!” Garner said. “Then we finish the routine with a wolfwall.”

The Lady Commodores leave for the campus of the University of Miami, where Nationals are held, Thursday morning at 5 a.m.

GULF COAST PLACED FIRST IN JUCO DIVISION!

The Gulf Coast Community College Cheerleaders placed first out of five teams in their division and 10th overall out of 100 teams!

Also, tryouts for next year’s squad will be on June 8-10, 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Gulf Coast.
