Gulf Coast’s Herndon Signs With Los Angeles
SOUTHPORT, Fla. - Former Gulf Coast and Mosley High School pitcher David Herndon is now taking his 93-mph fastball to Orem, Utah, to pitch in the Los Angeles Angels farm system.
“There’s plenty of right-handed pitchers in the draft,” Angels scout and minor league coach Tom Kotchman said. “What seperates him is the movement on his fastball, that’s something you cant teach.
“He’s going to break lots of wooden bats and make right-handed hitters really unhappy.”
Herndon said he was happy with his draft position as he went in the 5th round to L.A., after not coming to terms with the Minnesota Twins.
The 6’5”, 200-pound right-hander posted a 2.15 ERA with an impressive 10-1 record as a Commodore last season.
As the picks were flying off the board on draft day, and the rounds kept getting later and later, Herndon said he was feeling the pressure.
“We didn’t hear from the Angels,” Herndon said. “They snuck up on us, surpirsed me big time. Atlanta told me they would get me, after they passed, I was panicing. Then two picks later, the Angels got me.”
Herndon said he received “good 5th round money”, with which he is already going truck shopping.
He leaves for mini-camp in Tempe, Ariz., next Tuesday.
